Calvo Finishes 16th in NCAA Decathlon

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--Junior Kyle Calvo scored 7,134 points in the decathlon to finish 16th at the NCAA Championship in Sacramento, Calif.
Calvo finished seventh in the 100 meter dash in a timeof 11.12. He followed with a mark of 7.27m (23'10.25") in the long jump for third and marked
12.26m (40'2.75") in the shot put. Through three events, he ranked third, edging the fourth-place contender by just four points. In the final two
events of Day One, Calvo cleared 1.87m (6'1.50") in the high jump, tying for 18th in the event and then finished with a 10th-place finish in the 400
meter dash with a time of 50.25.
On Day Two started with the 110 meter hurdles which Calvo ran in a time of 14.86 for ninth place. He threw the discus 36.44m (119'7") for 19th
place. He cleared 4.50m (14'9") in the pole vault and finished tied for seventh. In the javelin throw, Calvo marked 47.77m (156'9"). Finally, in the
1500 meter run, Calvo finished 23rd with a time of 5:04.52. The University of Arizona's Jake Arnold won the event with 8,215 points. Arnold also
won the event in 2006.
Calvo Qualifies for NCAAs in Decathlon

PHILADELPHIA--Junior Kyle Calvo qualified for his third NCAA Championship and his second qualification in the decathlon. Calvo's 7,243 points
was the 17th highest score in the country this season and will join 24 other decathletes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif.,
June 6-9. Calvo will represent the Penn men while fellow junior Jesse Carlin will represent the Quaker women in the 800 meter run in Sacramento.
Men's Track and Field Finish Season at NCAA Regional

GAINESVILLE, Fla.--The Penn men's track and field team entered four events at the NCAA East Regional in Gainesville, Fla., but did not advance
out of the preliminary round in the 800 meter run or 4x100 meter relay and did not mark in the top five of the pole vault or long jump, Saturday.
Junior Tim Kaijala ran a time of 1:49.92 in the 800m to take third in his heat and finished 11th in the 30-man field. Only the winners of each of four
heats and the next four best times advanced to Sunday's final. In the 4x100m relay, Kevin Benjamin, Joey Brown, Sam Shepherd and Grafton Ifill
combined for a time of 41.21 and a 15th-place overall finish.
In the pole vault, sophomore Anthony Abitante failed to clear the opening height of 4.91m. The winning height was 5.51m, a new East Region record,
set by Binghampton-SUNY senior Rory Quiller. Kyle Calvo finished 16th in the long jump with a distance of 7.13m.
Men's Track and Field Compete at IC4As

PRINCETON, N.J--The men's track and field team sent nine entries to the IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J.
Bringing in a third-place finish in the long jump, Kyle Calvo marked 7.34m (24-1) in the event which also met the NCAA qualifying standard.
Also in the field, Anthony Abitante cleared 4.75m in the pole vault. John Carelli marked a distance of 14.52m in the triple jump and Andrew
McMillen competed in the shot put but fouled without marking.
On the track, sophomore Joey Brown took 17th in the 100m with a time of 10.88. In the 800m, Bryan Scotland clocked 1:54.05 for a 33rd-place
finish. On Friday, Ian Foley ran a ninth place time (just out of point scoring range) with a time of 31:26.87 in the 10,000m.
In the relays, Penn combined Kevin Benjamin, Joey Brown, Sam Shepherd and Jason Ellis in the 4x100 for a 16th-place finish and a time of 41.99.
The 4x400 saw Andrew Anders, Benjamin, Tim Kaijala and Shepherd finish 12th with a time of 3:14.38.
Kaijala and 4x100 Relay Earn Heps Titles

PRINCETON, N.J.--Junior Tim Kaijala won his first Ivy crown with a time of 1:49.76 in the 800 meter run, Sunday at the Ivy Heptagonal meet in
Princeton, N.J. The Penn 4x100 relay team (Kevin Benjamin, Joey Brown, Sam Shepherd, Grafton Ifill) also took home a title with a time of 41.01.
As a team, the Quakers scored 68 points in fourth place.

PHILADELPHIA--Though the men’s track and field team did compete at the Relays, Thursday-Saturday at Franklin Field, the event entries were
limited in preparation of the Ivy Heptagonals, May 4-5 in Princeton, N.J.
Over the three days, Max Westman ran the 400m hurdles (56.88), Dan Howard took 16th in the 3000m steeplechase (9.33.76), Clayton Smith (15:
01.13) and Brian Cullin (15:14.36) finished in the 30s of the 5000m, Kyle Calvo marked 5.40m in the long jump and Andrew MacMillen competed
in two events—shot put (14.92m) and discus throw (38.56m).
The relays were also successful and a good preview of Heps with several exciting outings.
Men's Track and Field Performs at Larry Ellis Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J.--The men's track and field team performed well with several top 10 finishes at the Larry Ellis Invitational hosted by Princeton,
Saturday. Junior Tim Kaijala ran an NCAA Regional time of 1:49.75 in the 800m run. It was Kaijala’s second qualifying time in the 800m this
season sneaking under the 1:50.40 standard with a time of 1:50.30 at the Penn Invitational. Kaijala took second in the race.
Penn combined Kevin Benjamin, Joey Brown, Sam Shepherd and Grafton Ifill to win the 4x100 meter relay in a time of 41.44. Individually, Brown
took third in the 100m dash with a time of 10.81 while Benjamin followed in 10th at 11.15. Brown also took third in the 200m dash, crossing at
21.83. Andrew Anderson took fifth in the 400m dash with a time of 48.85.
Kyle Calvo (15.03), Michael Bale (15.06), Willie Harris (15.22) all finished in the top 10 of the 110m hurdles. Bale finished fifth in the 400m hurdles
with a time of 55.01. In the field, sophomore Anthony Abitante took second in the pole vault, clearing 4.75m. Pete Habegger took second in the
long jump, leaping to 7.10m. Calvo cleared 1.94m in the high jump for fifth while Andrew McMillen threw a distance of 15.07m in the shot put for
sixth place. In the javelin throw, Russ Koch measured 50.38 for sixth and Joe Ruzbarsky marked 47.97m for ninth.
The invite was the last tune up for the Quakers before the 113th running of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field, April 26-28.
Men's Track and Field Successful at Penn Quad

PHILADELPHIA--Penn saw a number of top finishes from the team. Joey Brown took first in the 100m with a time of 10.95. He came in just
behind teammate Grafton Ifill in the 200m dash with a time of 21.95. Ifill took first with a time of 21.92.
Junior Time Kaijala blew the competition away with a time of 3:49.30 in the 1500m run. Running a smart race, Kaijala waited in the middle of the
pack until the last lap when he kicked ahead of three Villanova runners to win by near two whole seconds.
The Quakers used the distance events as a training run with just one Villanova runner joining them in the 3000m run. Ian Foley brought in the top time
in the 3000m with a time of 8:28.22. In the 10,000m run, Michael LaQuaglia (31:39.1) edged Brian Trembley (31:41.9) for the top spot. In the
110m hurdles, Michael Bale took first with a time of 15.41. Penn’s “A” team was clocked at 41.40 in the 4x100m relay for first.
In the field, Anthony Abitante cleared 4.90m in the pole vault. Andrew McMillen marked 44.45m in the discus to win the event, while Stephen
Bachman took second with 44.17m. The Quakers head to Princeton, N.J., for the Larry Ellis Invitational, April 20-21.
Kaijala Earns NCAA Regional Mark in 800m at Penn Invitational

PHILADELPHIA--The men's track and field team hosted the Penn Invitational where junior Tim Kaijala ran a time of 1:50.30 in the 800m to earn
an NCAA Regional mark and first place in the event. The team dealt with cold and snowy conditions, Saturday at Franklin Field.
Penn cleaned up in the sprints, taking first in the 100m, 200m and 400m. Sophomore Joey Brown ran a time of 10.75 (just shy of the 10.50 NCAA
Regional time) to take first in the 100m. In the 200m, Andrew Anderson (22.36), Jason Ellis (22.39) and Kevin Benjamin (22.70) were the top three
finishers. Sam Shepherd took first in the 400m with a time of 48.42.
Clayton Smith took second in the 5000m with a time of 14:59.35 while Sean McGinley (15:01.84) and Daniel Howard (15:04.26) rounded out the
top-five in the event. Penn took the top two spots in the 4x100m relay with the "A" team finishing at 41.78 and the "B" team crossing at 42.44.
Penn's "C" team was the only one to finish the 4x400m relay and came in second with a tmie of 3:25.26. The 4x800m relay saw Penn's "A" team
finish second at 7:59.51 with the "C" team in fourth (8:12.66) and "B" team in fifth (8:14.17).
Anthony Abitante took second in the pole vault after clearing 4.65m.
Penn is home again next weekend, hosting Princeton, Rutgers and Villanova in the Penn Quad at Franklin Field.
Men's Track and Field Takes Third at Navy Invite

ANNAPOLIS, Md.--The Quakers took third at the Navy Invitational with 117 points while Anthony Abitante and John Carelli won their events
Saturday in Annapolis, Md. Anthony Abitante cleared 5.05m to take first in the pole vault and give Penn 10 team points. The sophomore had met
the NCAA standard (5.05m) last weekend at Wake Forest. He finished well ahead of the second-place challenger at 4.75m.
In the triple jump, John Carelli marked 14.93m good for 10 team points in the Quakers. Joey Brown scored eight points with his second-place finish
in the 100m dash in a time of 10.98. Brown also took second in the 200m dash with a time of 22.25. Grafton Ifill also scored for the Quakers with a
time of 22.40. In the 400m dash, Sam Shepherd scored two points for the Red and Blue with a fifth-place, 49.16 time.
Tim Kaijala took second in the 800m dash with a time of 1:52.83. Bryan Scotland was right behind in third-place at 1:54.59. John Guzman also
scored points for Penn with a time of 1:55.98. Alec Bleday added two points to the Quakers’ team total with a time of 4:02.80 in the 1500m run.
In the 5000m run, Brian Trembley (15:11.25) and Sean McGinley (15:31.59) scored for Penn.
In the 110m hurdles, Max Westman (15.12), Willie Harris (15.22), Kyle Calvo (15.80) scored a combined 15 points for the Quakers. Dan Howard
and Brian Lang also scored some team points with their performances in the 3000m steeplechase. Howard finished at 9:34.14 and Lang crossed at 9:
51.25. Penn’s “A” squad in finished at 42.34 in the 4x100m relay for fourth place. In the 4x400m relay, Penn’s “A” finished in fourth at 3:19.16.
In the field events, Kyle Calvo and Pete Habegger finished second and third in the long jump. Calvo marked 7.01m while Habegger leaped to 6.87
m. In the shot put, Andrew McMillen scored two points for the Quakers throwing a distance of 14.45m. In the discus throw, Steven Bachman
scored two points with a 43.25m mark. Russ Koch scored two points for in the javelin with a mark of 55.10m.
Navy took home the team title with 212 points. Ivy League foe Princeton scored 142 points for second. Rounding out the field, Rutgers was fourth
with 87 points and Colgate scored 28 for fifth. The Quakers are back in action at the Penn Invitational at Franklin Field, April 7.
Men's Track and Field Wraps up Wake Forest Open

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--The Quaker men’s track and field team wrapped up the Wake Forest Open Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Anthony Abitante placed fourth in the pole vault and tied Penn’s sixth-best mark (5.05m) in the event. The sophomore met the NCAA Regional
mark, set a personal best and took fourth in the event.
Penn ran four in the 200m dash—Joey Brown (22.08), Sam Shepherd (22.31), Andrew Anderson (22.40) and Jason Ellis (22.73). In the 400m
hurdles, Michael Bale came in 35th with a time of 56.50. Willie Harris came in just behind him at 56.58. Jeremy Sinclair crossed at 57.01 while Ian
MacNeil came in a 57.89. Penn’s 4x100 team came in ninth with a time of 41.34.
The Quakers head to the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., March 31.
McEwen and Goldberg Finish First at Wake Forest Open

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--Junior Reid McEwen clocked a time of 14:41.79 in the 5000m run to win the event at the Wake Forest Open Friday.
Brian Goldberg won the 10,000m event and set a personal best with a time of 30:23.91. Several other Quakers competed as well. McEwen
crossed the line more than two seconds ahead of the second-place finisher in the 5000m. Michael Lovejoy followed at 15:09.17 in 15th.
Coming into the day, Kyle Calvo and Max Westman were in first and third place of the decathlon. Friday, the competitors completed the final five
events of the decathlon—110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m run. Westman finished with 6,884 points falling just 16 points shy of
the 6,900 points needed for an NCAA provisional regional mark. He placed first in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.05. He marked 52.49m for
second place in the javelin and 35.51m for fourth in the discus. He was timed at 4:47.00 in the 1500m (6th) and 4.00m for 11th place in the pole
vault.
Calvo scored 6,621 points for fifth place in the decathlon. His best event of the day was the javelin in which he marked 50.20m for a third-place
finish. His scores in the other events were: 110m hurdles-19.27; discus-34.85m; pole vault-4.30m and 1500m run-5:00.08. In the individual events,
Penn’s John Carelli took eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 14.86m just shy of the 15.00m NCAA Regional mark. Former Penn standout Tuan
Wreh won the event with a jump of 16.26m which set a new facility standard at Kentner. The previous mark was 16.22m set in 1995. Andrew
McMillen threw a mark of 16.00m in the shot put, good for 11th place.
In the 110m hurdles, four Quakers ran the preliminary race—Michael Bale (15.21), Jeremy Sinclair (15.67), Willie Harris (15.88) and Ian MacNeil
(16.41). Only Bale’s time and 16th-place finish were enough to make the final scheduled for Saturday. In the 400m dash, sophomore Sam Shepherd
led the way with a time of 49.19 in 21st place. Andrew Anderson and Kevin Benjamin registered times of 50.40 and 51.79, respectively.
Dan Howard and Brian Lang ran the 3000m steeplechase. Howard finished in a time of 9:52.63 while Lang crossed at 9:56.33. The day wrapped
up with Goldberg’s first-place finish in the 10,000m run. He finished a solid four seconds ahead of the competition at 30:23.91. The time was just shy
of breaking Penn’s top-10 (30:23.2), but was 10 seconds faster than his previous personal best.
Ian Foley (30:46.75) and Larry Contrella (30:50.10) made the top-10 as well (ninth and 10th, respectively) while Brian Cullin came in 21st at 32:
10.77. Penn will close out the meet Saturday with the hammer throw, long jump, pole vault and discus in the field events while the track will feature
the 200m dash, 400m hurdles, 1500m run, 3000m run, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay as well as the finals of the 100m dash and 110m hurdles.
