Kaijala Wins 800 Meter Run at IC4A Championship

BOSTON, Mass.--Junior Tim Kaijala cut two seconds off his preliminary time to win the 800 meter at the IC4A Championships. His time of 1:
50.69 earned him the title in Boston, Mass. over the weekend.  Penn competed in just four events at IC4As. Bryan Scotland also ran the 800 meter
run preliminaries, but his time of 1:53.94 did not qualify for the finals. Kaijala's time of 1:52.78 was the fourth best time in the preliminaries.

Alec Bleday ran the 1000 meter run finishing in the 16th of the preliminaries with a time of 2:30.08.  Penn's 4x800 meter relay of Kevin Kiley, Cody
Schovitz, Chris Howell and John Guzman came in eighth in the preliminaties with a time of 7:40.81 and qualified for the finals, but did not finish that
race.  Finally, Andrew McMillen fouled in the shot put.


Men's Track & Field Finishes Third at Heptagonals

NEW YORK CITY--The Penn mens track and field team scored 90 team points to place third at the Ivy Heptagonals at the Armory in New York
City. The Red and Blue earned 16 team points in the heptathlon as Kyle Calvo won the event with 5,427 points in the event and Max Westman took
third with 5,239.

Calvo combined the following marks to win the heptathlon with 5,427 points--60 meters: 7.12; long jump: 7.25m; shot put: 12.76m; high jump: 1.91
m; 60 meter hurdles: 8.39; pole vault: 4.50m; 1000 meters: 2:57.25. Westman's third place finish of 5,239 points was thanks to the following marks--
60 meters: 7.27; long jump: 6.79m; shot put: 11.98m; high jump: 1.82m; 60 meter hurdles: 8.20; pole vault: 4.10m; 1000 meters: 2:41.21.

Tim Kaijala took first in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:25.72 and added 10 more points to Penn's cause.  Joey Brown ran the 60 meter dash in
6.86 seconds for second place and eight points. Sam Shepherd placed sixth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.51 earning one team point.
Bryan Scotland took fourth in the 500 meter dash and was clocked at 1:04.51, good for four team points and an IC4A mark.

John Guzman sped to a second-place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:51.49 and eight points for Penn. Westman finished fourth for four
points in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.23.  The Quakers earned eight points in the 5000 meter run as Ian Foley finished in third with a time of 14:
31.22 and Reid McEwen came in fifth at 14:34.41. Both finishes were IC4A qualifying times.

In the relay events, Penn set an Armory track record in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 7:30.87. The foursome earned 10 points for the Red and
Blue and was comprised of Guzman, Kevin Kiley, Scotland and Kaijala and met the IC4A qualifying time. In the 4x400 meter relay, Andrew
Anderson, Brown, Westman and Shepherd combined for a time of 3:21.65, fifth place and two points.

In the field events, Anthony Abitante gave the Quakers eight points when he cleared 4.90m for second place in the pole vault. Calvo jumped 7.48m
in the long jump for second place and eight points. Freshman John Carelli took fifth and two points in the triple jump and marked 14.79m. Andrew
McMillen threw the shot put 15.66m for sixth place in the event and one team point.

The Heps title came down to the final race--the 4x400 meter relay where Princeton took second to maintain a slight lead over Cornell. The final
standings looked like this: Princeton, 154; Cornell, 151; Penn, 90; Columbia, 61; Brown, 48; Yale, 47; Dartmouth, 30; Harvard, 8.

The team will now prepare for the IC4A Championships in Boston March 3-4.

Men's Track and Field Races at Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup

UNIVERSITY CITY, Pa.--The Penn men's track and field team set 10 IC4A qualifying marks at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup hosted by Penn
State in University City, Pa. over the weekend.  Sophomore Joey Brown ran an IC4A qualifying mark of 6.94 in the preliminaries of the 60 meter
dash and then shaved it down to 6.90 for sixth in the finals. He previously qualified with a time of 6.92 at the Giegengack Invite last weekend.

Two Quakers qualified in the 400 meter dash. Sam Shepherd took fifth in the race and ran a 48.85. It is the third time time he has qualified for IC4As
in the 400 this season. Max Westman also snuck under the 49.50 standard with a time of 49.46 and 11th place in the race.  Junior Tim Kaijala took
second in the 800 meter run with a tim eof 1:49.92, just shy of the NCAA provisional mark of 1:49.90. Kaijala has already met the NCAA
provisional standard with a time of 1:49.40 last weekend. John Guzman and Bryan Scotland also ran IC4A qualifying times in the 800. Guzman was
clocked at 1:52.99 while Scotland came in at 1:54.54. Guzman's race was his fastest of the season.

Kaijala, Guzman and Scotland combined with Andrew Anderson to set an IC4A qualifying mark in the distance medley, 9:54.57. The team will need
to shave nearly 10 seconds off that time to meet the NCAA provisional standard.  The field events also yielded three IC4A marks. Anthony Abitante
cleared 5.00m in the pole vault. Abitante cleared the same height last weekend. Kyle Calvo jumped to 7.11m for seventh place and his second
qualifying mark of the season. Finally, Andrew McMillen threw the shot put 15.61m for his longest mark of the season and first IC4A mark.

The Quakers now gear up for Ivy Heptagonals, Feb. 24-25 in New York City.


Men's Track & Field at Scores at Giegengack Invite

NEW HAVEN, Conn.--The Penn men's track and field team set nine IC4A qualifying marks at the Giegengack Invite hosted by Yale in New
Haven, Conn. over the weekend. Tim Kaijala did one better setting a NCAA provisional mark in the 800 meter run.  A junior, Kaijala clocked a 1:
49.40 in the 800 meters setting a personal best and beating the team's season best by four seconds. Fellow junior, John Guzman ran a 1:53.78 for an
IC4A mark in the same race.

Sophomore Joey Brown ran a 7.03 in the preliminaries of the 60 meter dash. He shaved off 11-hundreths of a second for a 6.92, an IC4A mark,
and third place in the final race.  Sam Shepherd ran the 400 meter dash in 49.09 for second place, just behind the top finisher who clocked a 48.99.
The sophomore set a IC4A mark, though it was not his fastest time of the season.

Bryan Scotland had not run the 500 meter dash this season but set a team best 1:04.71 and set and IC4A mark in the process. He also placed
second in the race. Max Westman and Ben McKean also topped the team's season best running 1:05.37 and 1:07.04, respectively.  Reid McEwen
and Brian Goldberg both marked IC4A times in the 5000 meter run. McEwen came in second with a time of 14:28.28 while Goldberg's 14:40.37
put him in eighth place.  Penn's top 4x400m relay team placed third in the race and clocked a 3:17.73 for an IC4A mark.

Anthony Abitante cleared his highest mark of the season in the pole vault, 5.00m and set a IC4A mark in the process. He had hit the mark with two
4.80 marks earlier this season.  The Quakers will compete again at the Sykes-Sabock Cup hosted by Penn State, Feb. 9-10 in University Park, Pa.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.--Members of the Penn men's track and field competed at the 2007 Penn State National Open, Friday and Saturday in
State College, Pa.   Junior Tim Kaijala ran a personal-best 2:23.12 to win the 1000 meter run. His previous best was 2:24.97.  Kaijala also took the
third leg of Penn’s first-place 4x800 meter relay. Fellow junior John Guzman, freshman Kevin Kiley and sophomore Bryan Scotland completed the
team that combined for a time of 7:35.98.

Cody Schovitz took third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.08 seconds. Andrew Anderson and Joey Brown also ran the event, coming in 10th
and 17th, respectively.  The 4x400 meter relay placed ninth in the seeded race with a time of 3:19.15. The team was comprised of Anderson,
Schovitz, David Lint and Sam Shepherd.

Kyle Calvo placed third in the heptathlon with 5153 points, just shy of the 5200 points needed for an NCAA provisional mark. With the events split
over the two days, on day one the junior ran a time of 7.34 in the 60 meter dash, long jump (6.90m), shot put (11.92m) and high jump (1.97m).  
After the first day, Calvo was in second place. On Saturday, he ran an 8.53 in the 60 meter hurdles, cleared 4.10m in the pole vault and a finished in
2:56.60 in the 1000 meters.  Max Westman scored a 4633 for seventh place. Mike Hall also completed all seven events for a 10th place finish and
4310 points.

The Quakers head to New Haven, Conn., for the Yale Invitational, Feb. 2-3.


Men's Track Wins at Great Dane Classic

New York, N.Y.--The Penn men's track and field team scored 115 points to with the Great Dane Classic hosted by the University of Albany at the
Armory Track and Field Center in New York City, Friday.  The Quakers beat out 21 other teams to claim the top spot as a team. Tim Kaijala took
first in the one mile run with a time of 4:10.84. Though he beat the 11 others in the seeded race, it was not the fastest time Kaijala ran this season.
The junior clocked a 4:09.79 at the Navy Invite last weekend.

Another top finisher, Reid McEwen clocked a time of 8:20.51 in the 3,000 meter seeded run. He finished well ahead of his teammate and second-
place finisher Ian Foley (8:32.98). Penn's Michael LaQuaglia and Brian Goldberg took fifth and sixth, respectively, in the race.  Freshman John
Carelli landed a first-place finish marking 14.67 meters in the triple jump.  Penn took five of the top 10 places in the 5,000 meter run.

In the field events, sophomore Anthony Abitante cleared 4.80 meters in the pole vault for fourth place. Mike Hall and Kyle Calvo both cleared 1.91
meters in the high jump.

The Quakers are back in action Jan. 26-27 at the Penn State Open.


Men's Track Takes Second at Navy Invite

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Tim Kaijala (one mile run), Kyle Calvo (55m hurdles) and Anthony Abitante (pole vault) scored first-place finishes in their
events and led the Penn men's track team to a second-place finish at the Navy Invite in Annapolis, Md., Saturday.  The Quakers scored 151 points,
behind host Navy (201) but ahead of Viginia Commonwealth (141) and American (57).  Kaijala finished nearly three seconds ahead of his closest
competition in the one-mile run with a time of 4:09.79. He earned nine team points in the race. Freshman Graham Snow (4:31.23) earned a 10th
place finish good for one team point.  In the 55-meter hurdles, Calvo and Max Westman won their heats and finished first and second in the final.
Calvo ran a time of 7.90 seconds, with Westman right on his heels in 7.92. The pair earned 16 team points in the event.

Anthony Abitante cleared the highest mark (4.80m) in the pole vault and gave the Quakers nine points. Mike Hall earned five points, clearing 4.20m.
In other field events, John Carelli took second place and seven points for his 7.01m long jump and fifth place (four points) marking 1.86m in the high
jump. Carelli lost a jump-off with VCU’s Davon Smith who took fourth. He also earned seven points and a second-place finish in the triple jump
(13.90m).

Andrew McMillan and Brian Brazinski scored in third and fourth place, earning five and six team points, respectively. McMillan threw for 15.36m
while Brazinski measured at 13.72m. Brazinski also scored six points in the weight throw. He tossed a 13.22m, good for fourth place.  In the relays,
Penn’s 4x400m team scored seven points with a time of 3:28.34. The Quakers’ 4x800m team also scored seven points and clocked a time of 8:
01.87.  On the track, Kevin Benjamin and Joey Brown scored seven and four points with times of 6.53 and 6.65 in the 55 meter dash, respectively.

Jason Ellis and Mike Bale scored for the Quakers in the 200 meter dash. Ellis brought in four points with a time of 23.62. Hot on his trail was Bale in
a time of 23.65 and three points.  David Lint and Andrew Anderson ran the 400 meter dash finishing in third and eighth places, respectively. Lint’s
time of 50.57 seconds earned the team six points. Anderson’s 52.24 time gave the Quakers three points.

The 500 meter dash featured Sam Shepherd in second place (seven points) clocking a time of 1:07.09. Ian MacNeil also scored in sixth place (1:
09.14) with five points.  Competing in the longer distances, John Guzman (1:57.82) and Chris Howell (2.00.82) finished in fourth and fifth place in the
800 meter run and were awarded five and four points, respectively.  Brian Scotland ran a 2:31.30 (fourth place) in the 1000 meter run while Brian
Lang marked a 2:35.06 (fifth place). They gave the Quakers nine points combined.  Finally, in the 3000 meter run, Larry Contrell and Brian Cullin
together scored five points for the Red and Blue. Contrella ran a 8:53.96 while Cullin was not far behind in a time of 8:56.58.

The Quakers continue the indoor season Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Penn State Invitational.


Men's Track Opens at Princeton Invite

PRINCETON, N.J.--The University of Pennsylvania men’s track team opened the 2006-07 indoor track and field season Friday at the New Year
Invitational hosted by Princeton. The Quakers’ Tim Kaijala placed first in the one-mile run, Bryan Scotland clocked the top time in the 1,000 meter
run and Kyle Calvo crossed the line first in the 60 meter hurdles. 16 other student-athletes placed in the top-six.

Kaijala, a senior, ran the mile in a time of 4:14.35. Also competing in the event were Brian Lang (4:28.34), Bill Wells (4:38.14) and Alec Bleday (4:
38.98) in fourth, sixth and seventh places, respectively.  Scotland ran a time of 2:30.28 to take the top spot in the 1,000 meter run. He was followed
by John Guzman in second place (2:31.33) and Kevin Kiley in third (2:36.35). Mike Hall (2:50.04, 8th), Max Westman (2:56.94, 11th) and Calvo
(3:00.90, 13th) also ran in the race.

Calvo placed first in the 60 meter hurdles with a time for 8.24. Three other Quakers finished in the top-six—Michael Bale (8.35, 4th), Westman
(8.55, 5th) and Hall (8.56, 6th).  Three Quakers competed in the 300 meter dash. Andrew Anderson took third in the event with a time of 35.28.
David Lint placed ninth finishing at 36.12 and Bale crossed at 37.33 in 25th place.

Another top-six finish for Penn came in the 500 meter dash. Ben McKean was clocked at 1:08.36 good for sixth place. Doug McPherson (1:09.99)
and Ian MacNeil (1:13.46) also ran for 19th and 25th place, respectively.  Four ran the preliminaries of the 60 meter dash—Jason Ellis (7.18), Bale
(7.45), Jeremy Sinclair (7.47) and John Carelli (7.49)—but none made the final.

In the field events, Carelli took fourth in the triple jump (14.10m) and fifth in the long jump (6.85m).  In the shot put, Andrew McMillen threw for
14.19m and ninth place while Brian Brazinski was measured at 13.02m for 16th place.

Penn will compete again after the New Year at Navy on Jan. 13.
