Fifteen Tracksters Earn All-Ivy League Honors

Five members of the women’s track and field team and 10 different members of the men’s track and field team earned All-Ivy status at the 2006
Indoor Heptagonal Championships at Dartmouth Feb. 25-26.

On the men’s side, senior All-American Courtney Jaworski was a three-time honoree, earning two first-team selections and one second-team.  
Jaworski won the mile setting a new Heptagonal meet record and was part of the winning 4x800m relay team. The Tacoma, Wash. native finished
second in the 800m. Jaworski has received All-Ivy status nine times since his sophomore year, including seven first-team selections. For his efforts,
Jaworski was named the Male Athlete of the Meet.

Sophomore Kyle Calvo added two first-team All-Ivy nods to his resume after winning the heptathlon and long jump. Calvo is a four time all-
conference honoree, with three first-team selection to his credit. Classmate Tim Kaijala earned his first individual first-team selection with a first-place
showing in the 1,000m. He also earned first-team honors as a member of the 4x800m relay team in 2005 and 2006. Other members of the 4x800m
relay team were freshman Chris Howell and Bryan Scotland.

The four members of the winning 4x400m relay team were also named first-team All-Ivy League. That relay team was comprised of seniors Pete
Cochran and Eric Ljunquist and freshmen Sam Shepard and Kevin Benjamin.

Sophomore Mike Hall earned a second-team nod for his runner-up finish in the heptathlon. His score is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

On the women’s side, sophomore Jesse Carlin was named first-team All-Ivy after winning the 400m. The foursome of junior Christina Morrison,
sophomore Stacy Kim, freshman Kinjal Parikh and sophomore Carolyn Auwaerter finished second in the 4x800m relay and earned second-team
honors. The Quakers broke the 22-year old program record in the event, crossing the finish line in 8:56.02.

The men’s and women’s team will be back in action this weekend at the IC4A and ECAC Championships, respectively, in Boston, Mass.

Men's Track Wins Six Events to Take Third at Heps Championships

Hanover, N.H. - Led by sophomore Kyle Calvo's two Heptagonal titles, senior Courtney Jaworski’s win in the mile, sophomore Tim Kaijala’s win in
the 1,000m and two first-place relay teams, the Penn men’s track team finished third at the 2006 Heptagonal Championships on Sunday afternoon at
Dartmouth's Leverone Field House.

Jaworski was named the 2006 Athlete of the Meet after his outstanding performances over the weekend. He was the Co-Athlete at the Heps last
year.

Calvo won the heptathlon today outscoring classmate Mike Hall, 5,397 points to 5,352 points for his third career Heptagonal crown. Hall took
second. Calvo improved upon his own school record in the event and Hall’s score is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Jaworski won the mile in a time of 4:04.34, setting an indoor Heptagonal record in the mile in the process. After his win, he came back to take
second in the 800m with a time of 1:53.42. Two other Quakers scored in that event, Chris Howell and Bryan Scotland finished fifth and eighth,
respectively.

Penn’s other big winner on the day was Kaijala in the 1,000m. He finished in 2:24.97. Penn won the 4x400m relay and the 4x800m relays. Peter
Cochran, Kevin Benjamin, Eric Ljunquist and Sam Shepard made up the winning mile relay team, who crossed the finish line in 3:16.31. The two mile
relay team comprised of Howell, Scotland, Jaworski and Kaijala won in a time of 7:34.23.

Also placing for the Red and Blue were freshman Kevin Benjamin and Joey Brown in the 60m dash. Benjamin was fourth in 6.93 (which is the fifth
fastest time in Penn history) and Brown was eighth in 7.02.  Rookie Sam Shepard was fourth in the 400m with a time of 48.84 and Ljunquist was
third in the 500m in a time of 1:04.79. Brian Goldberg and Breton Bonnette were seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 5,000m. Michael Bale was
sixth in the 60m hurdles with a time of  8.24. The distance medley relay team was seventh as well.

In the field events, Calvo was ninth in the high jump with a height of 1.96m (6-5). Freshman Anthony Abitante was fourth in the pole vault with a
height of 4.90m (16-0 ¾). His jump is an IC4A qualifying mark and the 10th best jump in program history.

Cornell finished the 2006 Heps with 122 points. Princeton was second with 102, followed by Penn (98) and Brown (88). Yale (66) finished ahead of
Dartmouth (61) in sixth place. Harvard was seventh with 28 points and Columbia eighth with 24.

Several members of the Penn team will compete at the IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass. next weekend, while a few others will take part in the
Notre Dame last chance meet in South Bend, Ind.


Men's Track in Fourth Place After Day 1 of Heps

HANOVER, N.H. - The University of Pennsylvania track & field team is in fourth place after the first day of competition at the 2006 Ivy League
Heptagonal Championships at Dartmouth.

With four of 19 events complete, the Quakers have accumulated 14 points, a point back of third-place Brown. Princeton is in the lead with 47 points.
Penn will have plenty of opportunities to add to that total Sunday as 10 Quakers will take part in finals.

Sophomore Kyle Calvo was the standout of the day in the Championships, winning the long jump with a leap of 24-3 3/4, nine inches better than his
nearest competitor. Calvo has also taken a commanding lead in the heptathlon with 3,177 points, ahead of teammate Mike Hall, who is in second
place with 2,998 points. Calvo will also compete in the final of the high jump along with Michael Bale.

Chris Howell, Courtney Jaworski and Bryan Scotland will all take part in the 800m final with respective times of 1:53.43, 1:53.73, and 1:54.15 in
their qualifying heat. Sam Shepard won his heat to qualify for the 400m dash in a time of 49.06 seconds, while Eric Ljungquist posted a 1:04.64 time
in the 500m dash to qualify for that final. Tim Kaijala will compete for the title in the 1,000m after a 2:29.03 qualifying run.

In the mile, Jaworski turned in the day's top time, finishing in 4:11.70.  Bale had an 8.25 in the 60m hurdles to move into that final, while Penn's
4x400m relay will be seeded for tomorrow's final.

Men's Track Takes Sixth Against National Competition

State College, Pa. – The Penn men’s track team finish sixth at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup on the campus of Penn State on Saturday. The team
was lead by a first place finish by senior Courtney Jaworski in the 800m and strong finishes in the relays.

Jaworski won the 800m with a 1:49.62 and sophomore Tim Kaijala was third in 1:50.91.

Sophomore Brian Goldberg was fifth in the 1,000m with a time of 14:48.13, while rookie Brian Trembley was fifth in the 3,000m in a time of  8:25.
Newcomer Brian Scotland was fifth in the 600m in 1:20.28 as well. Sam Shepard was seventh in the 400m in a time of 48.56.

The distance medley relay team of  Scotland, Cody Shovitz, Chris Howell and Kaijala was third with a time of 10:03.72  While Penn’s 4x400m relay
was fourth in 3:16.44. Shepard, Jaworski, Kevin Benjamin and Joel Miller made up that team.   

Host Penn State (125) won the meet with points, while No. 10 Michigan (117.5) was second, Cornell (72.5) was third, Kent State (67) was fourth
and Central Michigan (60.5) was fifth. Penn and Akron tied for sixth with 46 points.

The Quakers will have one week of rest from competition to gear up for the 2006 Indoor Heptagonal Championships. Heps will take place Feb. 25-
26 at Dartmouth College.


Men's Track Adds Another NCAA Qualifier to the List

New Haven, Conn. – The distance medley relay for the University of Pennsylvania men’s track team provisional qualified for the NCAA Indoor
Track and Field Championships on Friday night as the Penn team put forth several strong performances over the weekend at the Giegengack
Invitational at Yale.

The foursome of sophomores Tim Kaijala and John Guzman and seniors Eric Ljungquist and Courtney Jaworski finished second behind powerhouse
Georgetown with a time of 4:44.20. Penn’s time was just .64 behind the Hoyas.

Freshman Brian Scotland won the 1,000m for the Quakers. He crossed the finish line in 2:28.79 and qualified for the IC4A Championships. Jaworski
and Kaijala qualified for the IC4A Championships in the 800m. Jaworski finished fourth with a time of 1:50. 46, while Kaijla was fifth with a time of 1:
50. 71 – which is a new personal best and moves him into fourth all-time at Penn. The mile relay team also ran an IC4A qualifying time of a time of 3:
14.47, which was good enough for second.

Rookie Kevin Benjamin was fourth in the 60m dash, running a time of 7.07. Ljunguist led a trio of three placewinners in the 400m. He placed fourth
with a time of 49.35, which is an IC4A qualifying mark. Other placewinners in that event were freshman Sam Shepard, who was sixth in 49.80 and
junior Cody Shovitz, who was seventh in 49.89. Rookie Max Westman was seventh in the 500m and sophomore Braden Lepisto was eighth. Reid
McEwen was fifth in the 1 mile run, while Brian Goldberg, Michael LaQuaglia and Breton Bonette were sixth, seventh and eighth, in the 3,000m,
respectively. Mike Bale, Mike Hall and Kyle Calvo went 4-5-7 in the 60m hurdles.

In the field events, Calvo was second in the long jump with a leap of 7.13m and freshman Anthony Abitante was second in the pole vault with a
height of 4.65m. Hall and Pete Cochran also placed in the long jump – sixth and seventh, respectively, while Hall and Calvo were fourth and fifth in
the pole vault, respectively. Freshman Stephen Brackman was sixth in the shot put, while sophomore Brian Brazinski was seventh. Westman jumped
1.81m in the high jump to finish seventh.

The Quakers head to Penn State for the Sykes-Sabock Cup on Saturday.


Strong Showing by Men's Track Helps Ivy League defeat Big East

NEW YORK, N.Y. - In the first-ever Ivy League vs. Big East Challenge, the Ancient Eight prevailed 192-190 at the Armory Friday night. The
Quakers had two NCAA provisional qualifers and 15 IC4A qualifers on the night, including sophomore Kyle Calvo in the long jump.

Calvo won the event with a leap of 7.52 meters, which is an IC4A and NCAA provisional qualifying mark. It is also the fourth best long jump in Penn
history. Senior Courtney Jaworski won the mile with the second-best time in Penn program history and an IC4A and NCAA provisional qualifying
time of 4:03.53.

Twelve other Quakers and the mile relay team qualified for the IC4A championships over the weekend, as well. In the 60-meter dash, freshman
Kevin Benjamin finished third with a time of 6.95, which ties him for fifth all-time in Penn program history. Junior Grafton Ifill ran an IC4A-qualifying
time of 6.96. Freshman Sam Shepard finished sixth in the 400 with his qualifying time of 49.14, while fellow rookies Brian Scotland (1:53.31) and
Chris Howell (1:53.8) finished fifth and sixth in the 800, respectively.

In the 500, senior Eric Ljungquist took fourth with a time of 1:04.0, the fifth-fastest time in program history. Sophomores John Guzman and Tim
Kajalia qualified in the 1,000 with time of 2:26.37 and 2:36.39, respectively. They placed third and fourth, while Guzman's time is eighth fastest in
program history. In the 5K, Ian Foley took second with the fourth-fastest time in program history (4:31.57). Mike Cassiday and Breton Bonnette
finished in 14:41.25 and 14:47.14, respectively, to qualify. Sophomore Pete Habegger placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 7.09 meters, and
the 4x400m relay team of Pete Cohran, Benjamin, Ljungquist and Shepard took second with a time of 3:16.01.

Other Quakers who placed in the event were Reid McEwen and Brian Tremblay who finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000. Freshman
Anthony Abitante was third in the pole vault with a height of 4.65 meters, and sophomore Mike Hall was third in the high jump with a jump of 1.93
meters.

Penn teamed up with Princeton and Cornell to defeat Connecticut, Rutgers and Seton Hall.

The Red and Blue will return to action Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Yale Invitational in New Haven, Conn.


Men's Track Takes Second at Navy

Annapolis, Md. - The University of Pennsylvania men's track team finished second among six teams at Navy on Saturday afternoon. Two Quakers
won their events, while Penn had 20 top-five finishes.

Senior Courtney Jaworski won the 1,000m in a time of 2:26.07 and freshman Kevin Benjamin won the 55m dash in 6.45 to lead the Red and Blue.

In the running events, sophomore Tim Kaijala took second in the mile with a time of 4:11.89 and rookie Sam Shepard was second in the 400 in a
time of 50:99. Sophomore John Guzman was third in the 800m with a time of 1:56.87. Several Quakers finished fourth in their respective events -
Michael Bale in the 55m hurdles (7.98), Jason Ellies in the 200m (23.27) and Chris Howell in th 800m (1:57.6) and four Quakers placed fifth - Mike
Hall in the 55m hurdles (8.01), Bryan Scotland n the 800m (1:57.75), Joel Miller in the 400m (51.99) and Ian Foley in the 3,000 (8:41.29).

In te field events, Penn had a few top-five performances as well. Freshman Anthony Abitante was second in the pole vault, while teammate Mike Hall
was third and Kyle Calvo was fifth. Abitante cleared 4.60m, Hall vaulted 4.45m and Calvo cleared 4.30m. Michael Daly was the runner-up in the
long jump, leaping 6.67m. He also finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.21m. Peter Cochran and Pete Habegger finsihed third and fourth
in the long jump with leaps of 6.64m and 6.55m, respectively.

The Quakers took second in both the 4x400m and the 4x800m. The mile relay finished in a time of 3:2143, while the two-mile relay crossed the
finish line in 8:01.59.

Navy won the meet with 196 points. Penn had 120 points, followed by Rober Morris with 102.50 in third, Virginia Commonwealth in fourth (58.50),
Anerican in fifth (37) and Winthrop in sixth (12).

The Red and Blue return to action on Jan. 27 at the Ivy League vs. Big East Cup in New York City.


Calvo Wins Heptathlon and Sets New School Record at UCONN Invite

STORRS, Conn

Penn sophomore Kyle Calvo broke the Penn school record in the heptahlon on Saturday at the UCONN Invitational. Calvo's 5,266 points was 54
points better than Chris Carter's 2004 mark and was good enough for first place at the meet. Classmate Mike Hall finished second in the event with
5,128 points.

Calvo won three of the seven events (the 60m dash, high jump and long jump) and took third in two (60m hurdles and pole vault). Hall won the pole
vault and took second in the 60m hurdles.

The Quakers will compete at Navy against the Midshipmen, Winthrop, Robert Morris and Virginia Commonwealth. The meet is slated to start at 11:
30 a.m. at the Halsey Field House.


Men's Track Opens Season at Princeton Holiday Classic

Penn won both relays and sophomore Tim Kaijala won the mile run to lead the men’s track team to a successful season opener at the Princeton
Holiday Classic at Jadwin Gym on Saturday.  The Red and Blue had 14 top-eight finishes on the day, including 12 top-five performances.

Kaijala finished the mile in 4:13.14, while teammate Alejandro Shepard crossed the finish line in fourth and a time of 4:25.68. Sophomore John
Guzman was the runner-up in the 1,000m with a time of 2:30.39. Rookie Chris Howell was not far behind in fifth with a time of 2:33.74. Michael
Cassidy clocked in at 8:44.35 in the 3,000m which was good enough fro fifth place.

Freshman Kevin Benjamin took third in the 300m dash in a time of 35.31 and placed eighth in the 60m dash with a time of 7.41. Junior Carson
Schmiett also picked up a third-place finish in the 500m dash. Schmiett clocked in at 1:06.31. The trio of Michael Bale, Mike Hall and Kyle Calvo
finished fourth, fifth and seventh, respectively in the 60m hurdles.

In the field events, Penn got a fifth-place finish from freshman Anthony Abitante in the pole vault. Abitante vaulted 4.45m (14’7.25”) in his collegiate
debut. Michael Daley placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.97m (42’06.75). Sophomore Pete Habegger placed eighth in the long jump
with a leap of 6.88m (22’07”).

Penn won both relays, taking the 4x400m relay in 3:21.39 and the 4x800m relay in 8:02.91.  The Red and Blue return to action on Jan. 14 at Navy
in Annapolis, Md.
